Russia says Starlink access cut for units across combat zones

Russian military bloggers and media outlets linked to the Ministry of Defense confirmed widespread disruptions of Starlink satellite internet terminals used by Russian forces across the front line and in border regions, sharply degrading battlefield communications.

Reports of mass Starlink outages were acknowledged by several of Russia’s largest pro-war Telegram channels and defense-focused publications, which said the disconnections affected units along the entire line of contact as well as rear and border areas. Russian commentators described the reports as accurate and ongoing.

According to these sources, the disruptions followed technical measures implemented by SpaceX in coordination with Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. The measures are intended to block all unverified Starlink terminals operating in both Russia and Ukraine, with the goal of preventing their use for drone strikes, battlefield coordination, and covert activities by Russian forces and agents.

Russian defense publication Voeniy Osvedomitel said the impact on Russian forces was critical, noting that there is no functional alternative to Starlink within Russian units and that large parts of command and control had become dependent on the system. The outlet said Russian military leadership had failed for years to develop a comparable system or establish a reliable backup.

Russian sources also reported that the loss of Starlink connectivity disrupted the transmission of reconnaissance data to missile and artillery units, limiting coordination between intelligence elements and long-range fire assets. Bloggers said assault units, command posts, and rear-area elements were affected simultaneously.

Further confirmation was cited by The Insider, which quoted a prominent pro-Kremlin Telegram channel stating that terminal reboots were ineffective and that Russian assault units near Kupiansk had lost the ability to maintain operational communications with higher command.

Starlink terminals have been widely used by Russian forces throughout the war despite being unauthorized. Russian units relied on the system for command and control, drone operations, and real-time battlefield coordination due to the absence of a secure and resilient domestic alternative.

Neither SpaceX nor the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has publicly detailed the technical mechanisms behind the shutdowns. Ukrainian officials have previously stated that Starlink service is restricted to authorized users and that measures are taken to prevent its exploitation by Russian forces.

The reported action aligns with Ukraine’s broader effort to deny Russian forces access to commercial satellite communications used for military purposes, particularly in support of drone operations and coordination behind Ukrainian lines.
