On August 20, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Russian Pacific Fleet conducted missile strikes on targets near the Kuril Islands (referred to as the "Northern Territories" by Japan) during planned exercises.
During the exercises, the targets simulated enemy vessels at a distance of over 300 kilometers. The guided missile cruiser "Varyag" launched two "Vulkan" anti-ship missiles, and the nuclear-powered submarine "Omsk" fired "Granite" cruise missiles.
