Saft signs a major contract with Naval Group to power next-generation submarines with advanced Li-ion battery technology

Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies and a global specialist in advanced battery technology, has been awarded a major contract by Naval Group to supply next-generation lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery systems for the Barracuda and Scorpene submarine families.

This award represents a strategic milestone for Saft, strengthening its position in European defense programs and confirming the growing demand for its advanced Li-ion battery technology, thanks to high-performance and reliability in top-end naval applications.

A breakthrough in submarine energy systems

Saft’s Li-ion batteries, based on proprietary cells developed and manufactured in-house, deliver a step change compared to lead-acid technologies:
• Higher energy density, enabling longer underwater endurance
• Enhanced operational performance and mission flexibility
• Total operational safety, meeting the most stringent defense requirements

This achievement is the result of several years of close collaboration between Saft and Naval Group.
