Sweden Launches Its First Military Reconnaissance Satellite
According to a report by Reference News Network on May 5, the Russian newspaper "Kommersant" reported on May 3 that Swedish television stated that Sweden has launched its first military reconnaissance satellite into space. One of the purposes of this satellite is to map military targets within Russia.
The launch was completed by SpaceX from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The satellite is expected to enter its designated orbit in about a month. Over the next two years, Sweden plans to launch approximately 10 such satellites.
“We have gained the ability to autonomously control and prioritize reconnaissance sensor tasks. This sensor system can operate continuously and conduct long-range observations. This will greatly enhance our capabilities,” said Söderman, head of the Swedish Armed Forces Space Department.
