The Chinese Army Participates in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations: Marching for Peace, Taking Responsibility for the World

On the afternoon of March 26, the Ministry of Defense held a regular press conference, where Colonel Jiang Bin, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Defense News Bureau and spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, answered reporters' questions.

Reporter: According to reports, the United Nations Secretary-General has appointed Major General Wu Junhui from China as the commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. Some analysts believe this is a high recognition of China's active participation in UN peacekeeping operations. What is your comment on this?

Jiang Bin: Since the Chinese military first participated in UN peacekeeping operations in 1990, it has carried out 26 peacekeeping missions, sending over 50,000 peacekeeping personnel, with mission areas covering more than 20 countries and regions. Seventeen personnel have sacrificed their lives for the cause of peace. Currently, over 1,600 Chinese peacekeeping personnel are executing tasks such as stabilizing situations, mine clearance, protecting civilians, and providing medical assistance in countries and regions including Lebanon, South Sudan, Abyei, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Chinese peacekeeping forces are professional, efficient, well-trained, and disciplined. An increasing number of Chinese military professionals are entrusted with important responsibilities by the United Nations and have received widespread praise from UN officials, mission area commanders, colleagues from various countries, and the governments and people of host nations.

As the largest troop-contributing country to UN peacekeeping operations among the permanent members of the UN Security Council and the second-largest contributor to UN peacekeeping finances, China has always firmly supported the core position of the United Nations, backed its important role in global peace and security affairs, continuously increased its investment in UN peacekeeping operations, deepened exchanges and cooperation with other countries in peacekeeping, and worked together to dispel the shadows of war, allowing the sunshine of peace to illuminate the world.
