The FAMa announce 50 fighters neutralized near Kidal — Mali regains the initiative against JNIM in 2026

Abeïbara, Kidal region, September 26, 2026. About 45 kilometers northeast of this Saharan locality, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) conducted an operation against several armed regrouping areas. The general staff claims to have neutralized at least 50 fighters, including several leaders, and destroyed military equipment. The announcement was relayed by Sahel Intelligence, Anadolu, and several West African media outlets. However, it should still be read for what it is: a military assessment communicated by the engaged party, without independent verification of casualties or identification of the affected leaders.

Geography matters here more than the number. Abeïbara is located in the Adrar des Ifoghas, a massif that controls the routes between Kidal, the Algerian border, and the corridors leading down to Gao. In this theater of operations, controlling a city is not enough. It is necessary to monitor the tracks, wells, and crossing points. A column can disappear in a matter of hours behind a line of rocks, only to reappear 100 kilometers away.

A strike prepared by intelligence

According to the official account, the operation on September 26 is part of the Dougoukoloko sequence and was triggered by "precise intelligence." This detail is probably the most important. Sahelian armies have long consumed their resources in presence patrols, failing to transform observation into targeting. A strike against an identified regrouping, on the other hand, shows a functioning intelligence chain at least occasionally: local source, surveillance, confirmation, then action.

On September 24, the Malian general staff had already reported positions north of Dandougou, where between 200 and 300 fighters with significant weaponry were said to be concentrated. It is impossible to know if these positions belonged to the same network targeted near Abeïbara. But the sequence suggests a reconnaissance campaign, rather than a mere stroke of luck. In the desert, a two-day difference can represent a considerable tactical evolution: dispersion of groups, movement of leaders, and abandonment of stocks.

Who was struck?

The Malian authorities speak of "terrorists" and "leaders," without providing names. Several actors operate in this part of Mali: the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM or JNIM), affiliated with Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS), and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), which Bamako also classifies as terrorist. Automatically attributing the 50 losses to JNIM would therefore be unwise.

The JNIM hypothesis remains operationally plausible. The group retains networks in the north and has the capacity to use trade routes and tribal networks. However, the EIGS and factions arising from the Azawad issue can also exploit the same spaces, sometimes with distinct objectives. Claiming responsibility, naming the dead, and analyzing the seized equipment will be necessary to establish the targeted chain of command. For now, the most solid information is the location of the operation, not the identity of the adversary.

The return of the Malian initiative

Militarily, this announced success addresses a recurring weakness of the FAMa: their difficulty in holding ground after a strike. Neutralizing a camp is one thing. Preventing its reconstitution is another. It is then necessary to occupy the water points, protect the logistical routes, and maintain a presence long enough to prevent survivors from recovering weapons and fuel.

This is also where the role of Russian partners, mentioned in the regional coverage of Malian operations, is measured. Their support can provide intelligence, strike, or training capabilities, but it does not replace a territorial control architecture. A camp destroyed near Abeïbara does not automatically secure the Kidal-Gao road. If the FAMa cannot transform the strike into control of the tracks, the targeted group will simply move to another valley.

A tactical victory under surveillance

The Bamako government can legitimately present this operation as a resumption of the initiative. It comes at a time when international analyses describe a continuous increase in violence linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State in the Sahel region. However, a high number of neutralized fighters does not alone measure civilian security. It is necessary to look at attacks against convoys, kidnappings, the reopening of markets, and freedom of movement between Kidal and pastoral areas.

The next developments will unfold in the next ten days. The announced reconnaissance missions will need to determine whether the "residual threats" are truly disorganized or if they have moved northwest, towards the Algerian border, or towards the Gao corridors. In this terrain, the enemy almost never disappears: it moves, waits, and rebuilds its stocks. The FAMa may have achieved a good combat action. To turn it into a strategic result, they will need to hold the tracks after the passage of aircraft and columns.
