054A All-round Evolution

The new generation 054A Ordos ship is set to launch in 2024 and officially enter service in December 2025. The rear deck is 16 meters wide, capable of accommodating one medium to large helicopter or two large drones. With a full displacement of over 4,000 tons, a height of over 30 meters, and a maximum speed of over 20 knots.

Military expert Li Yaqiang introduced that this ship is now equipped with new types of onboard helicopters, enhancing its comprehensive combat capabilities, allowing it to perform various tasks such as anti-submarine warfare, strikes, and logistics support. Compared to the limitations of past light helicopters, the new helicopters can conduct comprehensive anti-submarine operations, autonomously detecting and attacking submarines, as well as guiding the mother ship to carry out strikes.

Military commentator Wei Dongxu stated that the 054A frigate can undertake coastal and island defense tasks, with a greater emphasis on anti-submarine warfare. It can launch torpedoes and rocket-assisted torpedoes, and utilize hull-mounted sonar and towed sonar to effectively detect and locate underwater targets in escort formations, ensuring the safe and smooth execution of combat operations.

This ship can flexibly switch between primary and auxiliary roles based on mission requirements, and can efficiently coordinate and combine with destroyers and aircraft carriers, making it a reliable and practical general-purpose maritime combat platform.

On the forward deck, the weapon configuration for long-range strikes relies on a vertical launch system, while close-range strikes are handled by the main gun.

Wei Dongxu noted that the main gun on the Ordos ship has undergone significant changes, adopting a 100mm caliber, and the turret's shape and structure are markedly different from the previous 76mm caliber naval gun turret. This is an important sign of the firepower enhancement of the new generation 054A frigate.

During combat, the naval gun can continuously exert firepower in different environments. The 100mm naval gun has a high rate of fire, capable of delivering concentrated and precise firepower against maritime targets in a short time. In coastal and island areas, it can conduct barrage attacks on enemy coastal fortifications and island defense forces. Additionally, it has a high-angle anti-air capability, which can work in conjunction with ship-to-air missiles to intercept fixed-wing aircraft, drones, and other aerial targets, making it an important component of the fleet's air defense firepower system.

Mine Clearance Operations Achieve Technological Upgrades

The Qingzhou ship is an 081-class mine countermeasure vessel and is one of the smaller vessels in the People's Navy. Although it is not large, it carries an important mission of clearing various types of mines near the coast, paving the way for aircraft carrier groups by removing underwater obstacles and creating safe navigation routes, earning it the title of "Pioneering Pathmaker at Sea." At sea, even aircraft carriers will actively salute mine countermeasure vessels with their horns.

Li Yaqiang explained that whether in landing operations, routine navigation, or offensive and defensive actions, mine countermeasure vessels undertake the mission of scouting and clearing dangers, akin to a "suicide squad" leading the charge, embodying a strong spirit of sacrifice. Therefore, they hold a special status among the various types of naval vessels and have earned the respect of all ships.

Wei Dongxu stated that modern mine countermeasure vessels or boats are often constructed from low-magnetic steel, effectively reducing the risk of encountering magnetic mines, and they undergo regular degaussing. The rear of the hull typically has a dedicated mine clearance operation area, where mine detection and identification are completed using deployed mine clearance devices. In the past, mine clearance required vessels to directly enter minefields, which was highly dangerous. With technological upgrades, remote-controlled mine-hunting devices can now be used to search for and locate mines, transforming mine countermeasure vessels into mine countermeasure mother ships, equipped with unmanned mine clearance and hunting platforms, including small unmanned submersibles for comprehensive disposal.

A Military School Floating on the Sea

The Zheng He ship, hull number 81, is the People's Navy's first ocean-going training vessel. Since its commissioning in 1987, this warship has accumulated a voyage of over 600,000 nautical miles, equivalent to circling the Earth 28 times. It has successively supported over 40,000 naval cadets in practical training at sea, helping officers and soldiers transition from classroom learning to real-world maritime experiences, thus earning it the title of the first ship of Chinese military academies.

Military expert Li Yaqiang stated that Zheng He is a well-known maritime pioneer in China, whose maritime achievements shine in history and are renowned worldwide. Naming the first ocean training vessel after "Zheng He" carries profound meaning, aiming to inherit and promote the excellent traditions of predecessors in navigation, inspiring the new era navy to venture into the ocean and move towards the future. The hull number "81" also pays tribute to the birth of the People's Army.

Wei Dongxu believes that as an ocean training vessel, the Zheng He ship aids in the growth and development of officers and soldiers. Through ocean voyages and visits to multiple foreign ports, as well as international exchanges, cadets can gain in-depth understanding of various countries' maritime civilizations, maritime histories, and the current state of naval development, thereby broadening their international perspectives.
