Trump: Russia and Ukraine to Cease Fire for Three Days Starting the 9th, Exchange 1,000 Prisoners of War
On May 8, Xinhua News Agency reported from Washington (reporters Huang Qiang and Xu Jianmei) that on the afternoon of the 8th Eastern Time, U.S. President Trump posted on social media that Russia and Ukraine would implement a three-day ceasefire starting on the 9th and exchange 1,000 prisoners of war.
Trump stated that the ceasefire request was "directly proposed" by him and received the agreement of Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky, aiming to celebrate the Victory Day of World War II. This ceasefire will include a suspension of all military actions and a prisoner exchange, with both sides exchanging 1,000 prisoners of war.
Trump indicated that negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict are still ongoing and that "the goal is increasingly within reach."
On April 29, Trump mentioned that he had a phone call with Putin that day, during which they had a "long conversation" and he suggested a short-term ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
On the evening of the 8th, during a video conference of the permanent members of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Putin stated that he and Trump reviewed the history of the Soviet Union and the United States "fighting side by side against the Nazis and achieving victory" during their conversation.
The Russian side announced on the 4th that, in commemoration of the Victory Day of the Great Patriotic War on May 9, a ceasefire would be implemented from the 8th to the 9th, hoping that the Ukrainian side would follow suit. Zelensky subsequently announced that the Ukrainian side would unilaterally cease fire starting from midnight on the 6th, but did not mention the duration of the ceasefire. On the 7th, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Russian side would cease fire in the special military operation zone against Ukraine from midnight on the 8th until the 10th.
