UK plans to invest £8.4 billion to build nuclear submarines

According to a report by Reference News Network on August 1, Agence France-Presse reported on July 29 that the UK announced on the 29th that it will invest £8.4 billion in its next phase of nuclear submarine construction plans.

Downing Street stated in a press release that Prime Minister Andy Burnham will announce "a significant investment of £8.4 billion in the UK's nuclear deterrent capabilities, which will bring job opportunities and prospects for young people in the coming years."

According to reports, British defense contractor BAE Systems has been tasked with delivering four nuclear-powered submarines to enhance the UK's nuclear deterrent capabilities, with a contract value of £5.9 billion—the remaining funds of the plan will be invested in the relevant supply chain.

Downing Street stated that this investment will enable the first of the four submarines, the "Dreadnought," to conduct sea trials and "be ready to enter service with the Royal Navy in the early 2030s."

This funding will also allow the second submarine in the program, the "Warrior," to enter the sea trial phase and initiate the construction of the other two nuclear submarines.

According to Burnham, the program will create 47,000 jobs and skills training opportunities.
