Ukraine Introduces New Military Service Contracts to Address Personnel Shortage
Reference News Network, June 18 According to AFP on June 15, to address the personnel shortage crisis, the Ukrainian military has launched a new fixed-term military service contract starting this week, which clearly guarantees a post-service rest period, marking the official implementation of related military service reforms.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated on the Telegram app on the 15th: "Starting today (the 15th), ordinary civilians, conscripted personnel, active combat soldiers, and those already serving under contract can sign the new military service contract."
He added: "The new contract clarifies the terms related to service, guarantees a postponement of conscription after the service period, and introduces a new financial support system, allowing soldiers to have greater predictability and autonomy over their service period."
The contract duration for frontline combat positions is divided into three categories: 6 months, 10 months, and 14 months, while the contract duration for other positions is 24 months.
As the Russia-Ukraine conflict enters its fifth year, the Ukrainian military hopes to attract volunteers through this policy, reducing reliance on the criticized compulsory mobilization system.
Previously, Ukraine implemented indefinite military service contracts, and personnel signing the new contract will no longer be subject to the original system, and will enjoy at least a 6-month statutory post-service rest period after their service ends. (Translated by Shu Meng)
