Ukraine Procures 16 Swedish Gripen E Fighter Jets
According to a report by Reference News Network on July 4, Agence France-Presse reported on June 30 that the Swedish aerospace company Saab Group announced that Ukraine signed a contract with Sweden on June 30 to purchase 16 Gripen E fighter jets, with a transaction value of 24.6 billion Swedish kronor (approximately 2.53 billion USD).
Saab Group stated that it plans to deliver this batch of aircraft to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration between 2029 and 2030.
The company clearly pointed out that this contract also covers spare parts as well as related supporting components and equipment.
During Ukrainian President Zelensky's visit to Sweden at the end of May, he announced that Kyiv would purchase up to 20 Gripen E fighter jets. Sweden also stated at that time that it would donate 16 older Gripen C/D fighter jets to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities.
On the 30th, Zelensky stated that according to the agreement reached with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, these 16 older fighter jets would be transferred to the Ukrainian Air Force in early 2027.
According to a memorandum of understanding signed by the two countries last October, Kyiv plans to purchase 100 to 150 Gripen E fighter jets.
