Ukraine shows off its new Koral air defense systems

Ukraine has publicly shown a launcher for its Koral surface-to-air missile for the first time, unveiling it at the MSPO defense exhibition in Kielce, Poland, a Militarnyi correspondent reported.

State defense conglomerate Ukroboronprom released an image showing a missile launch from a self-propelled launcher mounted on a Czech-made Tatra truck chassis. Ukraine’s defense industry has used Tatra chassis for other systems before, including the Buревій rocket launcher, so the choice fits an established pattern rather than marking something new on that front.

Ukroboronprom describes the missile as intended to intercept aircraft and ballistic targets as part of an air defense system. The developer says it can also be used in exceptional cases against ground or surface targets with a distinct radar signature, though that would be a secondary role rather than the system’s main job.

Koral has been in development since at least 2021, when state design bureau KB Luch first unveiled it as a medium-range interceptor. At the time, the bureau said the missile relied on already tested components, including its motor, seeker head, pulse correction engines, inertial navigation system and a non-contact proximity fuze, an approach meant to cut development time by reusing proven parts instead of building everything from scratch. KB Luch said in 2021 that the technical base for the system was about 70% complete, with financing identified as the main obstacle to finishing it.

Ukrainian officials have given inconsistent range figures over the years. KB Luch said in 2021 that Koral was designed to hit targets out to 30 km. Deputy Defense Minister Ivan Havryliuk cited a range beyond 100 km in 2023. Neither figure has been confirmed through independent testing data, and the discrepancy has not been publicly explained.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry has said Koral is meant to eventually replace aging Soviet-era systems still in service, including the Buk and S-300PT, both of which date to the Cold War. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared alongside what was believed to be a Koral missile in an April 2026 video marking Ukraine’s defense industry holiday, the first time the missile itself, rather than a launcher, had appeared in public.

MSPO, formally the International Defence Industry Exhibition, runs September 8 to 11 in Kielce and is the largest defense trade fair in Central and Eastern Europe. This year marks its 34th edition.
