U.S. Air Force Bases in South Korea Experience Series of Fuel Leaks
According to a report from the Korean Central News Agency on the 19th, a fuel leak incident occurred last month at the Gunsan Air Force Base in North Jeolla Province, South Korea, with a leak volume exceeding 40,000 liters.
The U.S. Forces Korea revealed on the 19th that approximately 11,000 gallons (about 41,600 liters) of fighter jet fuel leaked from a fuel tank during an incident that occurred on the 26th of last month at the Gunsan base, involving the 8th Fighter Wing.
The 8th Fighter Wing stated that upon discovering the incident, measures were taken on-site to cut off and prevent the spread of pollutants, and claimed that there was no immediate threat to the health and safety of nearby community residents. The U.S. Air Force is investigating the cause of the incident.
The Korean Central News Agency noted that such a large-scale fuel leak incident occurring at a U.S. military base in South Korea is "quite rare." Additionally, it was reported that earlier this month, a fuel leak incident also occurred at the Osan Air Base in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, and the total scale of this fuel leak is still being assessed.
