U.S. Army awards AM General new $82 million Humvee contract

AM General has been awarded a new indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract to build High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles for the Army, with this initial action valued at $82.2 million against a cumulative ceiling of up to $754.6 million, the Department of War announced Aug. 13.

Work locations and funding will be determined with each individual order placed under the agreement, with an estimated completion date of Aug. 31, 2028. Army Contracting Command at Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, is the contracting activity, under contract number W912CH-26-F-A172.

The new award is separate from an existing HMMWV production contract, W912CH-24-F-0229, that the Army has repeatedly modified over the past year, pushing its cumulative value past $3.2 billion. That contract funded a $126.5 million order for M1165A1B3 vehicles in June 2025, a $50.9 million order for more than 200 vehicles across two variants in September 2025, and a $98.7 million modification in July 2026. It was not immediately clear whether the new Aug. 13 contract represents a follow-on vehicle tied to that same production line or a distinct award for a different portion of the Army’s HMMWV requirement.

AM General has built the Humvee for the Army since the 1980s, and the vehicle remains one of the most widely recognized pieces of American military hardware, with the Army’s current inventory numbering roughly 120,000 vehicles across variants including the M1152 and M1165 series. The standard HMMWV runs on a 190-horsepower Detroit Diesel V8 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, with a range of up to 350 miles (563 km) and a top speed exceeding 70 mph (113 km/h). The vehicle has served in combat and humanitarian operations in more than 70 countries, and its light armor left it vulnerable to roadside bombs during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, driving the Pentagon’s separate MRAP vehicle program in the mid-2000s and later a series of armor and suspension upgrades to the Humvee fleet itself.

The Army’s 2025 Army Transformation Initiative directed the service to cancel further HMMWV procurement in favor of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, which AM General also builds after winning the competition to produce the second-generation JLTV A2. The JLTV A2 contract runs for an initial five years with an option for five more, covering a maximum of 20,682 vehicles and 9,883 trailers for the Army and Marine Corps combined. Despite the Army’s stated shift away from the Humvee, it has continued placing sizable HMMWV orders through 2025 and 2026 as JLTV A2 production has worked through delays, with AM General’s president saying in October 2024 that full-rate production was on track to begin in the summer of 2026.

AM General has also continued to sell Humvees abroad through foreign military sales even as the Army moves toward the JLTV; a separate $13.1 million contract modification announced in September 2025 funded M1152 variants for Lebanon.

The Aug. 13 announcement did not specify which HMMWV variants or how many vehicles the Army intends to order under the new contract. As an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity agreement, the Army sets a ceiling value it can draw against through individual task orders rather than committing to a fixed vehicle count upfront.
