U.S. Army’s newest tank prototype heads to 1st Cavalry Division

The U.S. Army will send its M1E3 Abrams prototype to the 1st Cavalry Division for testing, the division confirmed in a social media post responding to an Army announcement about the next-generation tank.

The 1st Cavalry Division said it will receive both M1E3 prototypes and XM30 prototypes, testing the vehicles and providing feedback that will help shape the Army’s approach to future armored formations.

“And guess who gets to play with them first. The First Team will receive not only the M1E3 prototypes but also the XM30 prototypes to test, provide feedback on and to shape the future of Armored warfare,” the division wrote.

The Army’s announcement described the M1E3 as featuring a hybrid-electric drive, an autoloader and integrated protection systems built into a lighter frame than the current Abrams variants in service.

“The M1E3 Abrams represents a bold step forward in modern vehicle design, combining advanced protection, reduced weight, and a smaller logistical footprint to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s battlefield,” said Michelle Link, Deputy Capability Program Executive for Ground Combat Platforms.

The Army first showed the M1E3 publicly on January 14 at the Detroit Auto Show, presenting it as an early demonstrator built to test unmanned turret architecture, crew layout, digital systems and automation ahead of a planned M1A3 production tank. The design followed the Army’s earlier AbramsX concept demonstrator and reflects lessons the service says it drew from combat losses of donor Abrams tanks in Ukraine, where independent trackers and Ukrainian officials have reported significant losses among the 31 M1A1 tanks delivered, with estimates varying by source.

The most significant change from earlier Abrams variants is the unmanned turret. All three crew members, the commander, gunner and driver, are relocated into an armored crew capsule in the forward hull rather than sitting inside the turret itself, removing them from the tank’s most exposed section.

For targeting, the M1E3 uses the Leonardo DRS Stabilized Sight System, known as S3, as the commander’s panoramic sight, replacing the Safran PASEO system used on the earlier AbramsX demonstrator. The S3 is available in long-wave and mid-wave infrared variants and is also used on the Army’s M-LIDS counter-drone system.

Secondary armament comes from an EOS R400 Mk2 remote weapon station mounted atop the turret. In its displayed configuration, the station combines a 40mm Mk19 automatic grenade launcher, a 7.62mm machine gun and a launcher holding a single FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile. The R400 Mk2 is paired with an EchoGuard radar system for detecting and tracking small drones, giving the tank a built-in counter-UAS capability. Army representatives have said the weapon station’s loadout is modular and can be reconfigured depending on mission needs.

The Army has described the overall approach as built around a Modular Open Systems Architecture, intended to let new sensors, weapons and electronic warfare systems be added later through standardized interfaces rather than requiring a full redesign.

The Army has said four early M1E3 prototypes are planned, intended for testing with operational units to evaluate how the new features perform in practice, with serial production targeted for the end of the decade.

Separately, the XM30 program aims to replace the Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle, with General Dynamics Land Systems and American Rheinmetall Vehicles competing as finalists. General Dynamics delivered its XM30 Wolf prototype to the Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground last week.

The Army has not disclosed a specific delivery date for the M1E3 prototypes to the 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Cavazos, Texas, the total number of prototypes involved in this testing phase, or a timeline for when soldier feedback will inform further development of the design.
