U.S. Envoy: Iran Will Invite International Atomic Energy Agency to Inspect Its Nuclear Facilities
On June 18, Xinhua News Agency reported from Washington (reporters Huang Qiang and Xu Jianmei) that U.S. presidential envoy Wittekov told U.S. lawmakers during a closed-door briefing that Iran would invite the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect its nuclear facilities and begin to confirm and identify the specific locations where Iran's enriched nuclear materials are stored.
According to a report by the Associated Press citing informed sources, Wittekov informed congressional leaders and members of national security-related committees that the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding does not contain any "side agreements," but Iran has drafted a letter with the IAEA that includes the aforementioned invitation.
Wittekov stated that this letter to IAEA Director General Grossi would enable him to lead U.S. verification personnel to Tehran.
According to the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding, both parties agree to address the disposal of existing enriched nuclear material stockpiles according to a relevant timeline and mechanisms agreed upon by both sides, with the method involving a minimum on-site dilution plan under the supervision of the IAEA.
