U.S. Marines expand counter-drone capability with LMADIS
The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit recently fielded the Light Marine Air-Defense Integrated System, known as LMADIS, and immediately began working it into underway training aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island off the California coast, Staff Sgt. Michael Virtue reported for the 13th MEU. Marines assigned to the 3rd Low Altitude Air Defense Detachment, attached to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 364 (Reinforced), began training with the system against simulated unmanned aircraft threats, giving the unit hands-on experience with a counter-drone platform the Marine Corps has steadily expanded across the fleet since first testing it back in 2022.
LMADIS exists because of a battlefield problem that has only gotten worse in recent years. Cheap, commercially available drones have proven capable of destroying expensive military equipment and killing troops in conflicts from Ukraine to the Middle East, forcing militaries worldwide to rethink how they defend against threats that used to be dismissed as toys. The Marine Corps’ answer built around two versions of a ground-based air defense concept, with LMADIS representing the lighter, more expeditionary option compared to its heavier sibling MADIS, which pairs a pair of Joint Light Tactical Vehicles weighing roughly 6,350 kilograms (14,000 lb) each into a more heavily armed but less air-transportable combat unit, according to prior reporting from The Defence Blog.
Lance Cpl. Matthew Bass, a Low Altitude Air Defense gunner attached to VMM-364 (Reinforced), summed up why a system like this matters to Marines who may not fully grasp how serious the drone threat has become.
“Drones are the biggest thing right now and a lot of people don’t know the answer,” Bass said. “The LMADIS is that answer.”
The system itself runs on two Ultra-Light Tactical Vehicles, small, air-transportable vehicles built for exactly the kind of rapid deployment amphibious units require, and it takes four Low Altitude Air Defense gunners to operate as a team. One vehicle handles command and control, directing the mission, while the second executes electronic warfare attacks against detected drones, jamming the radio signals a drone’s operator relies on to fly it. Detection starts with the Skyview MPV-3 sensor, which can spot unmanned aircraft out to 3,000 meters (1.86 miles) and, depending on the radio frequency it picks up, can identify what category, or Group type, of drone it is looking at, information that determines exactly which jamming code the system needs to disable it.
Once the Skyview sensor flags a target, the RPS-62 radar takes over tracking duties, using four sensor panels arranged to cover a full 360 degrees around the system and bouncing radio frequency signals off the drone to continuously calculate its movement and distance. An integrated Link-16 communications system, a secure military data-sharing network used across NATO and allied forces, then feeds that tracking information back to the ship or a command post in real time, letting commanders see the threat picture as it develops rather than waiting for a delayed report. Once Marines confirm a target, they turn to the MFEW-D, a lightweight, portable electronic jammer that blocks the hostile radio frequencies and communications links a drone operator needs to keep flying, effectively severing the connection between the aircraft and whoever is piloting it and forcing the drone off its intended flight path.
Bass also pointed to the practical advantages the vehicle platform itself brings to an expeditionary unit like the 13th MEU, which by design needs to move quickly across difficult terrain and tight shipboard spaces.
“The LMADIS is perfect for the MEU,” Bass said. “ULTVs are extremely capable in rough terrain and they’re quieter and easier to transport using our aircraft than other military vehicles.”
That mobility advantage sits at the center of why the Marine Corps has kept investing in this specific counter-drone architecture even as it also builds out heavier variants for different missions. The Marine Corps awarded a $22.8 million contract modification in March 2026 to BlueHalo Labs, a subsidiary of AeroVironment, for additional Titan SV MPv3 counter-drone systems supporting a related program called Organic-Counter Small Unmanned Aerial Systems, established under an urgent operational need to get frontline units their own organic drone-defense capability, according to prior reporting from The Defence Blog. The broader MADIS family has also continued evolving through additional integrations, including a recent Marine Corps decision to add Allen Control Systems’ Bullfrog autonomous weapon station, a robotic gun mount that turns an ordinary machine gun into an AI-guided defense against low-cost drone swarms, into the Ground Based Air Defense program’s future architecture.
For the 13th MEU specifically, the value of LMADIS comes down to a straightforward operational math problem. Because the system runs on lightweight, highly mobile vehicles rather than heavier armored platforms, Marines can load it onto an aircraft, fly it into a contested area, and deploy it across rough terrain far faster than bulkier air defense equipment would allow. That speed matters enormously for an amphibious unit whose entire purpose is showing up somewhere fast, establishing a foothold, and defending it before a slower-moving adversary can react, and a drone threat that can appear with almost no warning leaves very little room for equipment that takes hours to set up.
