U.S. Plans to Build Large Military Base in Gaza Raises Questions
Reference News Network, February 22 According to a report from the British "Guardian" website on February 19, documents obtained by the "Guardian" regarding the "Peace Committee" contract indicate that the Trump administration is planning to build a large military base in the Gaza Strip that can accommodate 5,000 people and covers more than 350 acres (1 acre is approximately 0.4 hectares).
The base will serve as a military operations base for future international stabilization forces. This force is planned to consist of troops pledged by multiple countries and is an agency under the newly established "Peace Committee." The committee aims to take over governance of Gaza, with U.S. President Trump serving as chairman and his son-in-law Jared Kushner as one of the main officials.
The relevant documents require the phased construction of this military outpost, ultimately covering an area approximately 1,400 meters long and 1,100 meters wide, surrounded by 26 trailer-mounted armored observation towers, and equipped with small arms firing ranges, bunkers, and warehouses for storing combat equipment. The entire base will be surrounded by barbed wire.
Reports indicate that the Indonesian government has committed to sending up to 8,000 troops.
Insiders revealed that the contract documents for the military base were issued by the "Peace Committee" and drafted with the assistance of U.S. officials responsible for related matters.
The documents mention that a number of bunkers will be constructed, each measuring 6 meters long, 4 meters wide, and 2.5 meters high, equipped with complex ventilation systems for military personnel to use as shelters.
The documents stipulate: "The contractor shall conduct physical exploration of the site, phased inspections for underground voids, tunnels, or large caverns." This clause is likely aimed at the extensive tunnel network built by Hamas in Gaza.
Currently, it is unclear who owns the land where this military complex is proposed to be built, but large areas in southern Gaza are currently under Israeli control.
Diana Buttu, a Palestinian-Canadian lawyer and former peace negotiation representative, stated that building a military base on Palestinian territory without the approval of the Palestinian government constitutes an act of occupation.
