Gepard

The Gepard class, Russian Project 11661, was developed as a small frigate family for patrol, escort, and surface-combat missions. It served in the Russian Navy and became especially visible through Gepard 3.9 exports to Vietnam. The design followed Soviet/Russian small-combatant traditions while adding modern missile and sensor options.

Gepard-class ships can carry anti-ship missiles, gun armament, air-defense systems, torpedoes, and sensors depending on variant. The class is smaller than many Western frigates but more capable than a simple patrol corvette. Export versions show how Russian yards packaged regional sea-control capability for customers needing affordable missile ships.

In Russian service the class contributed to Caspian and regional naval presence, while Vietnamese ships strengthened coastal defense and South China Sea patrol capability. Gepard is therefore useful for understanding both Russian small-frigate development and Southeast Asian naval procurement.
