AH-1Z Viper

The AH-1Z Viper was developed for the U.S. Marine Corps as the attack-helicopter half of the H-1 upgrade program. It replaced the two-bladed AH-1W Super Cobra with a modernized platform sharing components with the UH-1Y Venom. The program focused on common logistics, improved sensors, greater weapons flexibility, and a more capable airframe for expeditionary Marine operations.

The Viper introduced a four-bladed composite rotor system, upgraded transmission, glass cockpit, helmet cueing, and electro-optical targeting systems. It carries a 20 mm cannon and can employ rockets, air-to-ground missiles, and air-to-air missiles depending on mission fit. The design keeps the Cobra's narrow tandem layout but updates nearly every combat system around modern Marine aviation requirements.

AH-1Z helicopters support Marine air-ground task forces with escort, close air support, armed reconnaissance, and anti-armor missions. Foreign customers have also adopted or ordered the type, broadening its relevance beyond U.S. service. Its main significance is continuity: it carries the Cobra concept into a networked, precision-weapon era.
