Scud-B

Scud-B is the NATO name most commonly associated with the Soviet R-17 Elbrus short-range ballistic missile. It followed the earlier R-11/Scud-A and became the most widely exported member of the Scud family. Its spread through Soviet allies and client states made it one of the defining tactical ballistic missiles of the Cold War and post-Cold War period. Many later regional missile programs used Scud-B hardware, design principles, or reverse-engineering as a starting point.

Technically, Scud-B is a road-mobile, liquid-fueled ballistic missile with inertial guidance. Its typical range is around 300 km, with a large payload suited to conventional, chemical, or nuclear warheads depending on operator and variant. Accuracy is poor by modern precision-strike standards, which makes it more suitable for area targets, cities, airfields, and infrastructure than point targets. Fueling, oxidizer handling, and launch preparation are operational weaknesses, but the system's mobility and simplicity made it attractive to many armies.

Operationally, Scud-B was used in the Iran-Iraq War, Gulf War, Yemeni conflicts, and several other theatres through direct Soviet exports, copies, and derivatives. Its impact often came from terror, political signaling, and disruption rather than precision military effect. The missile's global spread forced opponents to invest in missile defense and early-warning systems.
