Overview
F-104 Starfighter
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was a radical design for its time, featuring a long, thin fuselage and stubby wings, earning it the nickname 'the missile with a man in it.' It was the first interceptor in the USA's service capable of sustained speeds above Mach 2.

Research Notes

Mach 2 interceptor with extreme design focus

medium-high

The F-104 pursued speed and climb performance with a very small wing and powerful engine.

The F-104 Starfighter is one of the most distinctive Cold War fighters because its design was so sharply focused on speed, climb and interception. The tiny wing and powerful J79 engine produced extraordinary performance for the 1950s. National Museum material notes the aircraft set speed and altitude records, showing how radical the design was when introduced.

High performance with narrow handling margins

medium-high

The same design choices that made the F-104 fast also made it demanding and mission-specific.

F-104 capability came from acceleration, climb and high-speed interception rather than sustained turning combat. Its small wing imposed high landing speeds and limited low-speed tolerance. That made pilot training, mission selection and operating environment unusually important to safe and effective use.

Export success and safety controversy

medium-high

Starfighter service is remembered both for broad NATO adoption and for accident-rate debates in some air forces.

The F-104’s legacy is complex. It was exported widely and served for decades, but it also became controversial because some operators used it in roles and conditions far from the original lightweight interceptor concept. A rich page should explain this tension: the aircraft was technically impressive, but unforgiving when doctrine and training did not match its limits.
