The EA-18G Growler is a specialized electronic attack aircraft derived from the two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet. NAVAIR described the EA-18G as the Navy's next-generation airborne electronic attack aircraft, while the Navy fact file presents it as an aircraft integrating the latest electronic attack technology.

The aircraft replaced the EA-6B Prowler in U.S. Navy service and gives carrier air wings an organic electronic attack capability. It is also cooperatively operated with the Royal Australian Air Force, making it important beyond the U.S. fleet.

Modern air and naval warfare depends on radar, datalinks, communications, navigation, and electronic support. The Growler exists because disrupting or exploiting those systems can be as important as launching a missile.

Its carrier compatibility allows electronic attack to move with the carrier air wing. That is strategically important because the Navy cannot rely on fixed land bases for every crisis, and carrier strike groups need organic support against modern sensors and air defenses.

2003-12System development contract

The US Navy selected a Super Hornet-derived airframe to replace the EA-6B Prowler and placed Boeing under a system development and demonstration contract for the EA-18G.

2006-08First flight

The first EA-18G flew from Boeing's St. Louis plant, retaining roughly 90 percent commonality with the two-seat F/A-18F while trading the internal gun for the ALQ-218 receiver system.

VAQ-133 deployed aboard USS Abraham Lincoln carrying the AN/ALQ-249(V)1 NGJ-MB pod alongside legacy ALQ-99 pods — the system's first cruise. IOC followed in December 2024, and the pod was used over the Red Sea and Yemen.

2024-09NGJ Low Band awarded

After roughly five years of litigation the Navy awarded L3Harris a five-year, US$587.4 million engineering and manufacturing development contract for NGJ Low Band, the second increment; early operational capability is targeted for 2029.

2025-09First NGJ pods reach Australia

Raytheon delivered the first NGJ-MB shipsets to the RAAF ahead of schedule, with further deliveries running through 2026; No. 6 Squadron aircraft were observed carrying the pods on exercise in May 2026.

The Growler's value lies less in the airframe than in the fact that it is the only tactical jammer flying from carrier decks. Because it is a Super Hornet derivative, it keeps pace with the strike package it escorts, refuels from the same tankers and sits inside the same maintenance and logistics chain — an advantage the EA-6B never had. That commonality is also the constraint: the aircraft carries the same fuel and stores limits as an F/A-18F, so jamming pods, tanks and anti-radiation missiles compete for the same nine stations. Loadouts seen over Yemen, where Growlers flew with four AGM-88s in place of some pods, illustrate the trade-off between jamming and shooting.

The current transition is the most consequential change since the type entered service. The AN/ALQ-99 dates to the Vietnam era and is limited in power, reliability and frequency agility; the AN/ALQ-249(V)1 NGJ Mid-Band replaces it with AESA-based apertures able to place more power, more precisely, against more emitters at once. Mid-Band (Increment 1) reached IOC in December 2024 and has already been used operationally. Low Band (Increment 2), awarded to L3Harris in September 2024 after prolonged litigation, will not reach early operational capability before about 2029, leaving a period in which the fleet mixes new and legacy pods and retains ALQ-99 coverage at the low end of the spectrum.

Strategically, the Growler is the connective tissue between fourth- and fifth-generation air power: F-35s can survive contested airspace on signature alone, but non-stealthy strike aircraft, tankers and the carrier air wing's support fleet still need someone to suppress the sensors. Australia's purchase — 12 aircraft at Amberley, the only export fleet — gives a US ally a sovereign share of that capability and a stake in the NGJ programme, and it is one of the few areas where an allied air force operates a US Navy mission system on essentially the same schedule. The open question is reach: a pod-carrying tactical jammer must fly relatively close to the emitters it attacks, which is uncomfortable against long-range surface-to-air systems, and the Navy has no funded successor airframe. Whether stand-in effects migrate to unmanned platforms while the Growler shifts toward stand-off support is the central unresolved question about the type's next decade.
