Type 15 was designed to give the PLA a lighter tank option for plateaus, mountains and other terrain unsuitable for heavy MBTs.
The Type 15, also known as ZTQ-15, is China’s modern light tank intended for terrain where heavier tanks are less suitable. GlobalSecurity describes it as a 30-ton-class light tank with emphasis on plateau and island-landing roles. That makes it a different kind of armored capability from Type 99 or Type 96 MBTs.
The vehicle trades MBT-level protection for transportability, terrain access and enough firepower for lighter-threat environments.
Type 15 capability is centered on mobility and deployability. A lighter tank can move through weak bridges, mountains and high-altitude areas where heavy MBTs struggle. It cannot be treated as a direct peer to a heavy tank, but it can create local armored overmatch in terrain that favors lighter vehicles.
The tank’s importance comes from China’s geography and regional contingency planning, not only its gun size.
Type 15 is strategically interesting because it matches China’s terrain and contingency problems: Tibetan plateau operations, southern mountainous areas and amphibious or island contexts. That geographic fit explains why the page has value beyond a generic light tank description.
