Maritime patrol aircraft

The Kawasaki P-1 is Japan's indigenous maritime patrol aircraft designed for anti-submarine and maritime surveillance missions.

The P-1 was developed to replace older patrol aircraft and to meet Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force requirements around the country's surrounding seas. It is a purpose-built maritime patrol aircraft rather than a converted airliner, carrying sensors, mission systems, and stores for long-range surveillance and anti-submarine warfare.

The aircraft combines radar, acoustic processing, electronic-support measures, and weapons carriage for maritime patrol.

Maritime patrol aircraft are central to finding submarines and monitoring surface traffic over huge ocean areas.
