AV-8B Harrier II

The AV-8B Harrier II is important because it gave the U.S. Marine Corps fixed-wing strike aviation without requiring a full-size aircraft carrier. Its vertical/short takeoff and landing design allowed operations from amphibious assault ships, expeditionary sites and forward bases. That basing flexibility, not raw performance, is the center of the aircraft’s story.

AV-8B capability evolved from simple attack support toward precision expeditionary strike. Marine Corps material highlights targeting pods, Link 16 and beyond-visual-range weapons in later service, showing how an older V/STOL platform was upgraded to remain useful. Its limitations in range and payload were balanced by basing flexibility.

The Harrier II’s service context is inseparable from the Marine Corps transition to the F-35B.
