Constellation

The Constellation class is the U.S. Navy’s guided-missile frigate program intended to restore a more numerous, multi-mission surface combatant below the destroyer tier. The Navy selected Fincantieri Marinette Marine for detail design and construction after the FFG(X) competition. The class is based on a modified FREMM-derived design, reducing some development risk while adapting the ship to U.S. sensors, weapons, and combat-system requirements.

The U.S. Navy describes the Constellation class as an agile ship for both blue-water and littoral operations. Its mission set includes air defense, surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, electromagnetic warfare, and convoy or task-group support. The frigate’s value is not maximum firepower; it is adding credible forward presence and distributed capability where destroyers are too scarce or expensive for every mission.

Constellation matters because it fills a gap in U.S. fleet architecture between large destroyers and smaller patrol or littoral platforms. It is expected to support distributed maritime operations, escort missions, and sustained presence in contested regions.
