Research Notes

Late upgrade for an older Patton hull

The M48A5 extended M48 service life through a 105 mm gun modernization.

The M48A5 was a modernization of the M48 Patton family rather than a new tank. Its purpose was to keep existing M48 hulls relevant by giving them a firepower standard closer to the newer M60 series. The most important change was the adoption of the 105 mm M68 gun, replacing the earlier 90 mm weapon and allowing common ammunition with later U.S. and allied tanks.

105 mm firepower on a familiar platform

The upgrade made the M48 more compatible with M60-era firepower and logistics.

The M48A5 retained the rounded Patton hull and turret lineage but incorporated the 105 mm M68 gun, updated fire-control details, and other reliability changes depending on conversion standard. It still had the size, crew arrangement, and armor limits of the M48 generation. The upgrade was therefore cost-effective rather than revolutionary: it made existing tanks more useful without replacing the fleet outright.

Reserve, allied, and export longevity

The M48A5 kept Patton tanks useful for reserve and allied operators after newer tanks appeared.

M48A5 tanks served in U.S. reserve and National Guard contexts and were also used or adapted by allied armies. The type's long life demonstrates why upgrade programs matter: older tanks can remain useful when their weapons, sights, and support systems are refreshed. In the HiWars database it is best treated as a late-life Patton modernization, not as a separate clean-sheet main battle tank.
