Research Notes

Israeli M60 modernization package

medium

Sabra was developed by Israel Military Industries as an export upgrade package for aging M60 tanks.

Sabra is an Israeli tank upgrade family developed by Israel Military Industries for the export market. It was designed to turn older M60-series tanks into more capable modernized vehicles by improving firepower, protection, mobility, and battlefield electronics. The most prominent customer was Turkey, which adopted the Sabra Mk II package as the M60T.

Firepower, armor, and mobility modernization

medium

The package can add a 120 mm gun, improved armor, modern fire control, and engine or suspension updates.

The Sabra concept addresses the major weaknesses of legacy M60 tanks. Upgrade elements include a 120 mm smoothbore gun, improved fire-control systems, thermal sights, enhanced armor packages, and powertrain changes depending on version. The goal is not to create a new tank hull, but to extend the useful life of available M60 fleets.

Export-focused life extension for M60 fleets

medium

Sabra's operational importance lies in giving countries with M60 stocks a cheaper alternative to buying new tanks.

Operationally, Sabra upgrades let users field a more capable tank while reusing existing training, logistics, and hull inventories. Turkey's M60T programme is the best-known example. The package reflects a common post-Cold-War pattern: modern fire-control and protection systems added to older tanks to keep them viable in medium-intensity roles.
