Japan's first indigenous air-launched anti-ship missile

ASM-1 established Japan's indigenous air-launched anti-ship missile capability.

ASM-1, also known as Type 80, was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. It gave Japanese aircraft a domestic anti-ship missile instead of relying entirely on imported weapons. The programme became a foundation for later Japanese anti-ship missile families across air, ground, and naval launch platforms.

ASM-1 combined rocket propulsion and radar guidance for Japanese aircraft-launched anti-ship attack.

ASM-1 used a solid-rocket motor and active radar guidance for attacks against surface ships. Its launch platforms included Japanese combat aircraft such as the Mitsubishi F-1 and later compatible aircraft. The design was relatively compact and conservative, but it created the technical base for Type 88 SSM, Type 90 ship-launched missiles, and later ASM variants.
