Interim Cold War tank combining M46 hull lineage with a new turret concept
highM47 Patton matters because it filled a rapid modernization gap before the more mature M48 entered service.
The M47 Patton was produced during a period of urgency. It combined elements of the M46 lineage with a newer turret and 90 mm gun approach to get a more modern tank into service quickly.
That interim character is important. The M47 was not meant to be the final long-term solution, but it helped the U.S. and allies bridge the gap between postwar designs and the M48 generation.
For HiWars, M47 should be explained as a Cold War mobilization and modernization tank, not just another Patton variant.
