Mica

MICA, developed by MBDA, was designed to give French and export fighters a flexible air-to-air missile usable at both beyond-visual-range and within-visual-range distances. A defining feature is the family approach: active radar and imaging infrared seeker variants share a common missile architecture. This allows aircraft to carry different seeker types and complicate an opponent's defensive response. The missile is strongly associated with French aircraft such as Mirage 2000 and Rafale, as well as export users.

MICA's flexibility is its core capability. In air-to-air service, the missile can be used for medium-range engagements and closer dogfight situations depending on seeker and launch conditions. The infrared version enables passive engagements, while the radar version supports active-homing attacks. MBDA also developed VL MICA for ground and naval air defence, using the same missile family logic in a vertical-launch role. That cross-domain adaptability makes MICA more than a single fighter missile.

MICA's service importance comes from its connection to French combat aircraft exports. Buyers of Mirage 2000 and Rafale often evaluate the aircraft and missile ecosystem together, and MICA is part of that package. Its use in both air-launched and vertical-launch configurations also increases the family footprint. For an equipment database, MICA is a good example of modern missile design as a product family: common components, multiple seekers, and variants tailored to aircraft, ship, and ground air-defence roles.
