Overview
Buk-M2E
The Buk-M2E (NATO name SA-17 Grizzly, Russian name 9K317) is a Russian-made mobile medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed to defend field troops and logistical installations against air threats. It is an upgraded version of the Buk-M1 system, capable of engaging a wide variety of targets including aircraft, missiles, and helicopters. The system includes combat elements such as target-acquisition radar, battle management station, self-propelled firing vehicles, and surface-to-air guided missiles. It can engage targets at altitudes between 10 and 24,000 meters and at a maximum range of 50 km.

Research Notes

Export Modernization of Buk

Buk-M2E modernized the Buk concept for export customers and later battlefield threats.

Buk-M2E is an export-oriented development of the Buk family, associated with Almaz-Antey and marketed as a medium-range air-defense missile complex. It was intended to improve engagement capacity, target processing, and resistance to electronic attack compared with older Buk variants. The system reflects the post-Soviet modernization of Soviet air-defense architecture for international customers.

9M317E Missile and Networked Vehicles

The system combines command, radar, TELAR, launcher-loader, and support vehicles around the 9M317E missile.

Buk-M2E batteries use a distributed set of vehicles rather than one launcher type. The 9M317E missile, radar vehicles, command post, and launcher-loader assets allow the battery to detect, assign, illuminate, and engage targets across a defended sector. Wheeled and tracked configurations give operators choices between mobility, terrain access, and logistics needs.

Modern Medium-Range SAM Role

Buk-M2E is used to protect field forces and key sites from aircraft and precision weapons.

The system is marketed and fielded for defense against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and precision-guided weapons. In service, its effectiveness depends on sensor integration, crew training, electronic warfare conditions, and coordination with shorter- and longer-range defenses. Its importance comes from filling the medium-range tier in layered air-defense networks.
