Research Notes

Development Context

medium

PT-91 Twardy is Poland's major T-72M1 modernization program, entering service in the 1990s.

The PT-91 Twardy was created when Poland chose to modernize existing T-72M1 tanks with domestic improvements rather than replace them immediately with a completely new Western platform. Obrum and Bumar Labedy produced a package that improved survivability, fire control, automotive performance, and crew effectiveness. The result was a distinctly Polish tank that preserved commonality with the T-72 base while addressing several of its Cold War limitations.

Technical Profile

medium

The upgrade added ERAWA reactive armor, improved fire control, smoke systems, and engine refinements.

PT-91 kept the 125 mm smoothbore gun and autoloader architecture of the T-72 family, but added Polish ERAWA explosive reactive armor and the Drawa fire-control system. It also incorporated improved warning and smoke-dispenser arrangements, better fire suppression, and powerpack refinements. These upgrades did not turn the vehicle into a new-generation MBT, but they substantially improved a T-72M1 base for Polish and export use.

Operational Use

medium

PT-91 equipped Poland, supported Malaysian exports, and later became relevant in Ukraine-related transfers.

Operationally, PT-91 gave Poland an improved armored force during the long transition from Warsaw Pact equipment to NATO-standard tanks. The Malaysian PT-91M Pendekar export version also showed that the design could compete in foreign procurement when upgraded with customer-specific systems. More recently, PT-91's relevance has increased because available modernized T-72-family tanks became valuable for Ukraine and allied stock management.
