Merkava Mk 2

The Merkava Mk 2 followed the Mk 1 after early service experience, especially the lessons of Lebanon. It was not a clean-sheet tank; it was a focused refinement of the original Merkava formula, keeping the front-engine protected layout while improving battlefield survivability and practical crew use. The Mk 2 therefore represents the first major feedback loop in the Israeli tank program: operational lessons were folded directly into the production line rather than deferred to a distant replacement.

Compared with the Mk 1, the Mk 2 emphasized better protection against infantry anti-tank threats and close-range combat conditions. It retained the 105 mm gun and the crew-protection layout, while adding improvements such as enhanced armor arrangements and systems suited to fighting in broken terrain and built-up areas. The vehicle also continued the Merkava practice of using internal volume flexibly for ammunition, crew support, and emergency evacuation tasks.

In IDF service the Mk 2 became the mature version of the 105 mm Merkava line before the larger redesign represented by the Mk 3. It helped standardize domestic armor support, training, and maintenance while preserving the core emphasis on crew survival. Later Merkava versions surpassed it in firepower and electronics, but the Mk 2 was the tank that turned the Mk 1's concept into a more seasoned operational system.
