Aster 15

Aster 15 is the shorter-range member of the Franco-Italian Aster missile family. MBDA and Eurosam describe the Aster family as a highly agile air-defense missile line used in naval and ground systems. Aster 15 was optimized for shorter-range fleet and point defense, complementing the longer-range Aster 30 in layered architectures such as PAAMS and SAAM.

Aster missiles are notable for their high agility. The family uses inertial navigation with mid-course updates and an active radio-frequency seeker in the terminal phase, while the PIF-PAF control concept improves endgame maneuvering. For Aster 15, that makes the missile suitable for defeating aircraft, sea-skimming anti-ship missiles, and other fast threats close to the defended ship or force.

In service, Aster 15 contributes to layered air defense by covering threats that leak through longer-range engagement zones or appear at short notice. It is especially relevant for naval forces because ship self-defense requires fast reaction, high maneuverability, and integration with combat-management systems. Its significance is tied to Europe's independent missile-defense industrial base and the operational need to counter anti-ship missiles.
