TOW became a standard Western heavy anti-armor system because it was lethal, adaptable and widely integrated.
BGM-71 TOW is a major heavy anti-tank guided missile family with decades of service. Its wire-guided and later improved variants gave infantry, vehicles and helicopters a practical way to defeat armored targets at standoff range. The system’s longevity reflects incremental upgrades and a very large user base.
TOW requires operator tracking but delivers significant anti-armor capability from ground or vehicle mounts.
TOW’s basic tactical logic is semi-automatic command-to-line-of-sight guidance: the operator keeps the sight on target while the missile flies. That demands exposure and training, but it also provides a heavy, relatively cost-effective anti-armor effect. Later variants improved warheads and target attack options.
Despite newer fire-and-forget systems, TOW remains important because stocks, launchers and vehicle integrations are widespread.
TOW persists because it is deeply embedded in vehicle fleets, infantry units and allied inventories. Fire-and-forget missiles offer tactical advantages, but TOW remains useful where range, warhead size and existing launch infrastructure matter. Its continued use shows how older missile ecosystems remain operationally significant.
