Research Notes

Improved Metis Family

Metis-M modernized the lightweight Metis concept with stronger anti-armor performance.

The 9K115-2 Metis-M, NATO AT-13 Saxhorn-2, developed the original Metis idea into a more capable portable anti-tank system. Its purpose was to keep the light launcher concept while improving range and warhead effect against newer armored vehicles. That made it attractive for infantry formations that could not carry heavier missile complexes.

Tandem-Warhead Portable Missile

The upgraded missile improved lethality while preserving a man-portable launcher approach.

Metis-M retains the portable guided-missile structure but uses a larger, more capable missile with tandem HEAT effect against explosive reactive armor. The operator still uses a SACLOS style engagement, keeping the sight on target through flight. The system trades some weight for better performance while remaining smaller than heavy ATGM teams.

Modern Light ATGM

Metis-M has appeared in Russian and export inventories as a compact guided anti-armor system.

Metis-M and Metis-M1 weapons have been reported with multiple users and in modern conflicts. Their battlefield relevance comes from portability, relatively low cost, and ability to threaten vehicles or field positions from concealed launch sites. The family demonstrates how legacy Soviet guidance concepts were updated for post-Cold War armor threats.
