Research Notes

Helicopter ATGM for Late Cold War Combat

Shturm was developed to arm Soviet helicopters and vehicles with faster anti-armor firepower.

The 9K114 Shturm, NATO AT-6 Spiral, was developed as a Soviet anti-tank missile system for helicopters and some ground vehicles. It answered the need for higher missile speed and longer engagement reach than early wire-guided infantry weapons. The system became closely associated with Mi-24 attack helicopters and Soviet armored reconnaissance forces.

Radio-Command Supersonic Missile

The missile uses command guidance and a launch tube suited to aircraft and vehicle platforms.

Shturm differs from small infantry ATGMs because it was built around vehicle and helicopter integration. Its missile flies at high speed and uses command guidance rather than a trailing wire, which is better suited to aircraft launch. The design supports anti-armor and multi-purpose warheads depending on variant and platform.

Mi-24 and Vehicle Weapon

Shturm served widely on Soviet and export helicopter fleets.

Shturm equipped Soviet and Russian helicopters, especially the Mi-24 family, and appeared in export service with countries operating Soviet attack aviation. Later Ataka developments built on the same broad role. Its significance lies in making helicopter-launched anti-armor missiles a normal part of Soviet combined-arms warfare.
