Research Notes

Lighter Company-Level ATGM

Metis was developed as a compact Soviet anti-tank system below larger tripod missiles.

The 9K115 Metis, NATO AT-7 Saxhorn, was developed as a lighter man-portable anti-tank guided missile system for close infantry support. It complemented larger systems such as Fagot and Konkurs by giving smaller units a lighter launcher and missile package. The emphasis was portability and quick deployment rather than maximum range.

Compact SACLOS Wire-Guided System

The system combines a small launcher, optical tracker, and tube-launched missile.

Metis uses semi-automatic command to line of sight guidance with wire command transmission. The operator tracks the target through the sight while the system steers the missile. Its short engagement envelope and small missile made it more manageable for infantry, though the operator still had to maintain aim until the missile arrived.

Portable Anti-Armor Niche

Metis filled the gap between disposable rockets and heavier guided missile teams.

Metis systems served with Soviet and export users and remained useful where light infantry needed guided anti-armor fire without heavy equipment. Later Metis-M and Metis-M1 variants increased range and warhead performance. The original system is important because it shows how Soviet ATGM design scaled down to company-level portability.
