Mobile SHORAD radar
Sentinel was developed to give short-range air-defense units a mobile three-dimensional surveillance radar.
The AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel was designed for the ground-based air-defense problem of detecting and tracking low-altitude threats early enough for weapons to engage. System briefs describe it as a three-dimensional phased-array radar, and reference sources connect the design to Hughes and later Raytheon production. Its development reflects the US Army need for a mobile radar that could move with air-defense units rather than depend on fixed surveillance sites.
