Research Notes

Argentine assault rifle designed after the Falklands era

The FARA 83 was an Argentine 5.56 mm assault-rifle program developed by Fabrica Militar de Armas Portatiles Domingo Matheu. It reflected Argentina's interest in an indigenous modern rifle that could replace older 7.62 mm FAL-pattern weapons with a lighter intermediate-caliber system.

Conventional 5.56 mm rifle with folding-stock practicality

The rifle followed a more conventional layout than many experimental South American designs, using a detachable magazine, selective fire, and a folding stock for easier transport. It was intended to provide the handling and ammunition weight advantages associated with the global move to 5.56 mm service rifles.

Limited production constrained by economics

The FARA 83 is best understood as a capable national program that arrived in difficult budget and procurement conditions. Production remained limited, so the rifle became historically notable without displacing the larger installed base of FAL-derived Argentine small arms.
