Research Notes

FN's 5.56 mm successor after the FAL era

medium

The FN FNC was developed by FN Herstal as a 5.56x45 mm NATO assault rifle after earlier FN CAL experience. It gave Belgium and export customers a modern small-caliber service rifle at a time when NATO armies were moving away from full-power 7.62 mm battle rifles. The weapon also became the basis for Sweden's Ak 5 family.

Robust gas-operated rifle with NATO-caliber export flexibility

medium

The FNC uses a gas-operated rotating-bolt action, selective fire, STANAG-type magazines, and fixed or folding stock versions. Its layout is conventional but rugged, with design emphasis on reliability and ease of manufacture. It never achieved the FAL's global reach, but it remained a credible export assault rifle.

Belgian service rifle with important Swedish and export derivatives

medium

The FNC served with Belgium and several export users, while Sweden's Ak 5 derivative became especially important. That derivative story gives the FNC more historical weight than its direct procurement numbers alone suggest. It represents FN's successful adaptation from battle rifles to the 5.56 mm assault-rifle market.
