Research Notes

Canadian maritime helicopter replacing the Sea King

The CH-148 Cyclone was developed as Canada's shipborne maritime helicopter for modern frigate operations.

The CH-148 Cyclone is Canada's main shipborne maritime helicopter and replaced the long-serving CH-124 Sea King. It was developed from the Sikorsky S-92 family but configured for Canadian Armed Forces maritime requirements. Its role is to extend the reach of Royal Canadian Navy ships through surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, and tactical transport.

Shipboard helicopter with sensors for surface and subsurface missions

The Cyclone integrates maritime sensors, communications, and shipboard operating features into a twin-engine helicopter.

The Cyclone's design emphasizes operations from frigate decks in difficult weather and sea states. Mission systems support surface and subsurface surveillance, while the airframe provides range, payload, and endurance for maritime patrol tasks. Folded dimensions, naval communications, and ship integration are as important as raw flight performance because the helicopter is part of a ship's combat system.

Key sensor and response aircraft for Canadian naval task groups

The CH-148 gives Canadian warships an airborne search, tracking, and response capability beyond the ship's horizon.

In service, the Cyclone's value comes from making a frigate more capable than it would be with ship sensors alone. It can search wider areas, classify contacts, support rescue operations, and transport personnel or supplies. Its procurement history was complex, but operationally it is central to how Canadian naval forces monitor and respond in maritime environments.
