Research Notes

Long-range SAR helicopter for Canada's demanding geography

The CH-149 Cormorant was selected to give Canada a robust all-weather search-and-rescue helicopter.

The CH-149 Cormorant is a Canadian search-and-rescue helicopter based on the AW101 family. It was chosen for Canada's unusually large SAR area, harsh weather, coastlines, mountains, and remote regions. National Defence Canada describes the Cormorant as the RCAF's primary all-weather SAR helicopter since 2001, making it a lifesaving military aircraft rather than a combat platform.

Three-engine helicopter built for range, hover stability, and rescue payload

The Cormorant combines long range, hoist capability, stretcher capacity, and adverse-weather systems for rescue missions.

The aircraft's design is centered on reaching people in distress and keeping crews safe in difficult conditions. Its range, payload, rescue hoist, cabin space, and stable hover are all mission-critical. In SAR configuration it can carry casualties and technicians, while its systems support operations over water, mountains, forest, and Arctic environments.

Operational value measured in rescue reach and availability

The Cormorant supports Canada's 24/7 national SAR system and is being modernized to remain effective.

In service, the CH-149's importance is humanitarian and strategic: it allows the armed forces to respond across a vast national area. The mid-life upgrade program reflects the need to keep navigation, communications, safety, and sensor systems current. For HiWars, the Cormorant belongs among military equipment because armed forces often provide national rescue and crisis-response capabilities beyond combat.
