Swiss Cold War battle rifle

The SIG SG 510, known in Swiss service as the Stgw 57, was Switzerland's powerful 7.5 mm service rifle.

The SIG SG 510 was a Swiss battle rifle adopted as the Sturmgewehr 57 by the Swiss military. It fired the Swiss 7.5 mm cartridge in a heavy, accurate, and robust rifle that reflected Switzerland's marksmanship culture and defensive doctrine. Compared with later lightweight assault rifles, the SG 510 feels like the last generation of full-power national service rifles.

Full-power accuracy and rugged construction

The SG 510 emphasized range, stability, and durability, but at the cost of weight and controllability compared with later 5.56 mm rifles.

The SG 510's roller-delayed system, heavy construction, bipod provision, and full-power cartridge gave it excellent range and stability for deliberate fire. Those same traits made it heavy and less suited to the lighter, high-volume infantry tactics that shaped later assault rifles. The weapon's capability story is therefore a tradeoff between precision and burden.

Predecessor to the SG 550 era

The SG 510 sets the baseline for understanding why Switzerland later moved to the 5.56 mm SG 550 / Stgw 90.

Operationally, the SG 510 is most useful when placed before the SG 550. It shows what Switzerland valued in a service rifle: accuracy, robustness, and domestic production. The later shift to a lighter 5.56 mm rifle did not erase those priorities; it adapted them to a new ammunition and infantry-mobility era.
