Overview
DF-31
The DF-31 (CSS-10) is a third-generation long-range, road-mobile, three-stage, solid-fuel rocket intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) developed by the People's Republic of China. It is designed to carry a single 1-megaton thermonuclear weapon and has a range of 7,000 to 8,000 kilometers. The DF-31A variant, first deployed in 2007, has an improved range of 11,000 to 12,000 kilometers. The missile is operated by the People's Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF).

Research Notes

Solid-fuel Chinese ICBM family

The DF-31 is a Chinese solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile family tied to mobile nuclear deterrence.

The DF-31 is a Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile family that marked an important shift toward solid-fuel, road-mobile strategic missiles. Compared with older silo-based liquid-fuel systems, solid-fuel mobile missiles can improve readiness and survivability. The DF-31 is therefore important for understanding the modernization of China's nuclear deterrent.

Mobility and survivable nuclear force

The DF-31 family increases survivability by moving parts of China's ICBM force beyond fixed silos.

The DF-31's capability story is centered on mobility and solid-fuel readiness. Road-mobile launchers can complicate preemptive targeting and strengthen a second-strike posture, while solid propellant reduces launch preparation time. Variant improvements increased range and deployment flexibility, making the family a core element of China's strategic missile modernization.

Transition from older strategic missiles

DF-31 bridges China's older liquid-fuel ICBM force and newer large mobile or silo-based systems such as DF-41.

Operationally, the DF-31 sits between the older DF-5 era and the more recent DF-41 expansion. It gave China a more survivable mobile ICBM force while preserving a relatively restrained nuclear posture compared with very large silo fields. That development path is the key context readers need on the equipment page.
