A stopgap heavy tank between KV and IS designs
mediumKV-85 was created to give Soviet heavy tank units an 85 mm gun before the IS series was ready.
The KV-85 was a wartime Soviet heavy tank developed in 1943 as a transitional response to German heavy armor. The existing KV-1 family was increasingly under-gunned, while the new IS heavy tank series was not yet fully available. Installing an 85 mm gun and revised turret on a KV-derived chassis gave Soviet units a temporary improvement, but the vehicle's role was always limited by the arrival of better IS designs.
