Research Notes

Soviet bridge between T-55 and later smoothbore tanks

medium

The T-62 was developed to bring a high-velocity 115 mm smoothbore gun into Soviet tank service.

The T-62 emerged from Soviet efforts to increase tank gun performance beyond the 100 mm weapons carried by T-54/T-55 vehicles. Rather than designing a completely new generation from scratch, Soviet engineers built on the T-55 layout and introduced a larger turret ring and the 115 mm U-5TS smoothbore gun. This made the T-62 an important transitional design: more powerful than the T-55, but not as advanced as later T-64, T-72, and T-80 families. The current page groups related derivatives and captured or modified variants such as TR-580 and Tiran, so the article should explain the baseline T-62 while acknowledging that national rebuilds differed substantially.

115 mm U-5TS smoothbore as the defining feature

medium

The T-62's main technical importance was its smoothbore gun, paired with familiar Soviet armor and automotive design.

The T-62's defining feature was the 115 mm U-5TS Molot smoothbore gun, widely described as the first smoothbore tank gun to enter mass tank service. The gun gave high muzzle velocity and improved kinetic penetration for its time. The vehicle retained a conventional Soviet four-man crew, compact hull, diesel engine, and low profile. Compared with the T-55, the T-62 offered better anti-armor performance but remained constrained by limited gun depression, cramped crew spaces, and modest reverse speed. Later upgrades added laser rangefinders, applique armor, smoke dischargers, and improved sights. The core design remained a Cold War medium/main battle tank optimized around firepower.

Extensive combat record and many national variants

medium

The T-62 served widely with Soviet clients, was captured and modified, and still appears in lower-intensity wars.

The T-62 saw combat across the Middle East, Africa, Afghanistan, and later post-Soviet conflicts. Its battlefield record was mixed: the gun was dangerous, but survivability and fire-control quality varied sharply by operator, training, and modernization level. Israel captured Arab T-62s and incorporated some into Tiran-related programs, while other states modified T-62 hulls for local requirements. The vehicle's continuing appearance in conflicts reflects availability rather than modern superiority. For HiWars, the useful framing is that the T-62 was historically important because it introduced smoothbore tank firepower at scale and then became a long-lived platform for many operators and rebuilds.
