Type 037 Hainan was developed as a submarine chaser during China's transition from coastal defense toward more modern naval capability.
Type 037 Hainan was a mass-produced Chinese submarine chaser developed to replace older Soviet-derived small craft. It became one of the PLAN's most numerous coastal combatant families, giving China a practical vessel for near-shore patrol and anti-submarine duties during a period of limited blue-water capability.
Type 037 Hainan matched its sensors, weapons and hull form to the submarine chaser mission rather than a universal fleet role.
The base Hainan design carried guns, ASW rocket launchers, depth charges and sonar on a compact diesel-powered hull.
